Arts Gowanus Open Studios 2017

More than 350 Brooklyn artists open their studio doors during the 21st Gowanus Open Studios on October 21 & 22, 2017. From former factories and warehouses to studios, the public will have the opportunity to see first-hand the art and meet the artists behind one of the city’s most vibrant artistic communities. The event is free and open to all.

From 12-6pm, Saturday 10/21 and Sunday 10/22, visitors are welcome to go from studio to studio in any order, designing their own tour of the spaces. This year, a select group of New York City artists will curate their own Lists of Top 10 Can’t Miss Studios and Exhibits. Some of the artists creating Top 10 Lists are: Joan Bankemper, Heather Bhandari, Jennifer Coates, Steve DiBenedetto, David Humphrey, Matthew McCaslin, and James Siena.

The Top 10 Lists will be a fun addition to this year’s event but in no way exhaustive. All participating artists are top quality. Visitors are encouraged to check out the online directory and come prepared to explore the studios and neighborhood with an eye toward discovering something new.

Artist Curated Top 10 Lists are available October 15 on our website.

Amid debate over possible Gowanus rezoning and the increased real estate development, Gowanus Open Studios is a unique celebration of the many visual artists, musicians, textile and ceramic artists, graphic artists and craftspeople that form the creative backbone of the neighborhood. “Every year, Open Studios gives people from all over New York the chance to see up close and behind the scenes the amazing work that is being done by a dedicated group of artists, many of whom have called Gowanus home for decades,” said Abby Graf Subak, Executive Director of Arts Gowanus. “It is an opportunity for art-lovers to get a personal glimpse into the life of an artist, explore places where often they didn’t realize art was being made, and discover some new and inspiring favorites.”

Brooklyn Solar Works hosts this year’s kick-off party Friday, October 20, 2017, 7 – 10pm featuring artwork by Brooklyn Art Cluster Gallery/The Cluster Gallery. The party is free and open to the public. More details available on our website in the near future.

GOS 2017 is presented by Arts Gowanus, a non-profit organization, an organization of artists and arts organizations working together to support each other, to connect to our community, and to ensure the Gowanus Canal neighborhood continues to be a thriving and creative community of art-makers and art-appreciators.
