Tamo. Using Color and Texture to Express Emotion

Color and texture are at the center of Georgian artist Tamo’s quest to express her emotions.

The artist cites Abstract Expressionism and Conceptualism as influences, but her images have a combination of restraint and power that puts them in their own category. In her paintings, bold graphic compositions gain an air of mystery through the artist’s sharp eye for color placement and her ability to create layers of contrasting rough and smooth surfaces.

“I employ any tool that could be used to give the desired form and texture to the piece,” she notes. That sense of freedom is seen clearly as her images combine a strongly tactile quality with a vital visual energy. She brings thickly applied paints, dynamic brushstrokes, and patterns of lace-like delicacy into the mix. Adept at exploring slight variations in tone to give an image depth and using bursts of contrasting shades to punctuate it, the artist gives each image a strong presence that helps achieve her goal of rendering a “positive life impression.”

About the Exhibition

The variety that exists in the exhibition, Reconstructing Reality, creates a sense of exploration that cannot be denied. The viewer is able to go from the ephemeral to the figurative in just a few moments, only to be snapped back to an equally jarring duality between works of traditional embroidery and surreal landscapes. The contrast, though strong, is far from harsh, with each piece made entirely accessible by the expertise each artist puts into their own styles and works, allowing for the viewer to fully enjoy the full range of art on display.
