Christopher Breining, Balancing Technical Mastery With Artistic Interpretation

Long Island native Christopher Breining’s naturalistic watercolors and drawings balance technical mastery and figurative representation with the personal interpretation of the artist.

A self-taught artist, Breining prefers to start with a photograph — usually black-and-white — that he can trace and then transfer to paper using a light box. Working from that tracing, Breining brings his own emotional interpretation to the subject, either in watercolor or graphite. He’s particularly fond of painting in the wet-on-wet technique in watercolors, and known for the distinctive stippling effect he employs in his pen and ink drawings. He’s also well known for his compelling portraits of historical figures and scenes. This artist may be working from photographs, but there’s a sense of reimagining and revitalization to his pieces that comes from the sensitivity of his brush and pen, as well as his clarity of color and line.

Christopher Breining is inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds him on Long Island, and hopes that his work will have a positive impact on the art world in general.

About the Exhibition

The variety that exists in the exhibition, Reconstructing Reality, creates a sense of exploration that cannot be denied. The viewer is able to go from the ephemeral to the figurative in just a few moments, only to be snapped back to an equally jarring duality between works of traditional embroidery and surreal landscapes. The contrast, though strong, is far from harsh, with each piece made entirely accessible by the expertise each artist puts into their own styles and works, allowing for the viewer to fully enjoy the full range of art on display.
