Line of Sight Redux: An exhibition of photography and painting By Amy Williams and Ella Yang

Brooklyn, NY – After a well-received run on the North Shore of Long Island, Line of Sight Redux, a two-person exhibit of Brooklyn artists Amy Williams and Ella Yang, will be hosted by Coworkrs Gowanus, an innovative shared working space in the heart of Gowanus. In this exhibit, each artist explores New York City scenes with singular views of the intense urbanity they both call home. While Williams and Yang work in completely different mediums, both are interested in looking close up to create intimate portrayals of often overlooked details in their environments. In addition to the reception, the exhibit will be open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm, and on weekends by appointment with the artists.

Williams turns her camera lens towards what may be familiar, such as an iconic element of New York City’s landmark Grand Central Station or old-fashioned fire escapes, but then she re-conceptualizes them as abstract forms to create fresh, new images. An important element of her practice is that she uses traditional film and darkroom techniques to produce the rich, nuanced effects in her black and white city photographs.

Yang’s signature light-filled oil paintings celebrate views which might not have obvious aesthetic appeal – a brownstone stoop, a local deli, an abstract industrial structure – but momentarily reveals a special patina. She seeks a simple way to capture that particular spirit of a scene. Inevitably the paintings become infused with her wonder and delight at having discovered something – a pattern, a gesture, an angle of light – that is inherently beautiful.

Amy Williams is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. Williams has exhibited extensively at 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and has been included in two group shows at Galerie de Multiples in Paris, France. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. The artist has several group exhibitions scheduled for 2016, including a collaboration with poet Nicole Callihan.

Ella Yang is a first-generation Korean-American and native New Yorker. Largely self-taught, she has shown in solo and group exhibitions at galleries in the New York City area. Her paintings are in private collections in the USA, Hong Kong, Italy, France, and Austria, as well as in the collections of NYU Langone Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center. Three of her paintings are on loan to the U.S. Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland, through the Art in Embassies program. She appears in the book “100 New York Painters,” by C.M. Dantzic (Schiffer Books, 2006). Yang is a graduate of Yale College.
