Line of Sight: An exhibition of photography and painting By Amy Williams and Ella Yang

Brooks Brothers Manhasset is pleased to present Line of Sight, a two-person exhibit of Brooklyn artists Amy Williams and Ella Yang. Each artist explores New York City scenes as well as views captured during “escapes” from the intense urbanity they both call home. While Williams and Yang work in completely different mediums, both are interested in looking close up to create intimate, singular portrayals of often overlooked details in their environments. All works will be available for sale and 10% of sales will be donated to the Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club’s arts education program.

brooks-brothers-manhassetWilliams turns her camera lens towards what may be familiar, such as an iconic element of New York City landmark Grand Central Station or the leaves of a Costa Rican palm, but then she re-conceptualizes them as abstract forms to create fresh, new images. An important element of her practice is that she uses traditional film and darkroom techniques to produce the rich, nuanced effects in her photographs. In Line of Sight, Williams is showing black and white city images as well as color photographs from her travels in the USA and abroad.

Yang’s signature light-filled oil paintings celebrate views which might not have obvious aesthetic appeal, but where the commonplace has a special patina at the moment she is there: a brownstone stoop, a local deli, a flower-lined path to a parking lot. She seeks a simple way to capture the spirit of a scene at a particular instance. Inevitably the paintings become infused with her wonder and delight at having discovered something – a pattern, a gesture, an angle of light – that is inherently pleasing.

Amy Williams is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. Williams has exhibited extensively at 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and has been included in two group shows at Galerie de Multiples in Paris, France. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. The artist has several group exhibitions scheduled for 2016, including a collaboration with poet Nicole Callihan.

Ella Yang is a first-generation Korean-American and native New Yorker. Largely self-taught, she has shown in solo and group exhibitions at galleries in New York City and its environs. Her paintings are in private collections in the USA, Hong Kong, Italy, France, and Austria, as well as in the collections of NYU Langone Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center. Three of her paintings are on loan to the U.S. Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland, through the Art in Embassies program. She appears in the book “100 New York Painters,” by C.M. Dantzic (Schiffer Books, 2006). Yang is a graduate of Yale College.
