The abstract photography of Lithuanian-American artist Richard A. Usanis is unique, compelling, and utterly fascinating. Through his photography, Usanis has sought to find beauty in the micro-world and meaning in those aspects of landscape that are usually overlooked and mostly unseen.
Early in his career, this translated to surreal perspectives but it eventually segued to the abstract images he creates today: images devoid of recognizable objects, containing instead only lines, colors, and simplified forms. For Usanis, it is the process of separating these lines, colors, and forms from a recognizable context that enables him to unearth all the beauty and accompanying emotion contained within. In his work, he adheres strictly to the tenets of abstract painting, including no reference point that might indicate what the object may in fact represent.
Usanis explains his artistic process and journey in simple but powerful terms: “I look for a set of lines, forms, and/or colors that evoke beauty in the mundane: beauty that becomes apparent only when separated from the object.” Through this, he seeks to inspire his viewers to find the treasure which life has to offer.
