The acrylic on canvas paintings of American artist Marianne Fernandez are bold, powerful, and utterly fascinating.
Combining a strong use of line and form with brilliant colors and heavy brushstrokes, Fernandez explores a wide range of styles, from figurative to abstract. Each canvas is filled with diverse components that lend several layers of meaning to the work. Compositions contain elements of tension with a sense of structural harmony and balance to create a unique effect.
In her artistic process, Fernandez doesn’t start with an overall concept or idea but rather lets the materials and subject take her where they may. As she explains, “Some of my works just come out as I paint or draw, and even I don’t know what they will become until they are done.” For Fernandez, art is necessary to her survival and the manner in which she creates helps to free her mind and emotions. In the end, it is the spontaneity of her process that makes her art so endearing and the emotive content that makes it so powerful.
