Etsuko Shida says that in her paintings there is “a continuous dialogue between the canvas and myself,” a process that results in works with a complex sense of form and color.
“I aim to capture the spontaneity of the moment by using different tools,” she says, “such as brushes, spatulas or sponges.” This gives her works an impressive variety of textures — from soft areas of color to sharp lines that look as if they could have been etched into the surface of the painting.
She also uses a varied palette to strong effect, balancing her colors to give each image a sense of space and depth. Working in acrylics and oils, as well as diatomite and powder pigments, she creates works in which ancient forms and symbols are incorporated into vivid patterns. Her intricate yet simple compositions form a multi-layered world that draws the viewer in through its playful sensibility and dynamic sense of movement. “My paintings do not scream at you,” she says, “but they will start speaking to you after looking at them for a while.”
