Tatiana Abrantes’ Figurative Oil Paintings Explore the Human Experience studied Fine Arts in Johannesburg, and later on drawing and painting at the School of Arco in Lisbon. I am inspired by life, and ethnic themes influenced by my great love for Africa.
Tatiana Abrantes was born in Mozambique. Although she currently lives and works in Portugal, her native Africa is always in her heart and a vast source of inspiration for her painting practice. Early on, Tatiana studied fine arts in Johannesburg, as well a drawing and painting in Lisbon, honing her craft and specializing in oil painting on canvas.
In putting brush to canvas, exploring a wide palette from rustic earth tones to expressionistic hues, Tatiana paints from an emotive point of view. Her brushstrokes are visible and her imagination is not hidden in technique – it is there for all to see. Bodies often float in and out of space, taking control of the canvas, yet she frequently shrouds figures, as if they are either disappearing into or escaping out of the painting. Painted with biographical themes in mind, many of Tatiana’s works refer back to the political strife and horror seen in Africa and in life, but also to love and tenderness. The artist fully accepts the challenge of depicting the full range human experience by way of her personal journey.
