Brenda Ness-Cooper’s ultra-modern take on landscape painting pares down the genre’s descriptive aesthetic to find the inner character of each location.
Ness-Cooper divides her watercolor work between unknown places of beauty – an empty beach, a private garden – and brand name locales, such as the island of Santorini or the shores by the Sydney Opera House. But in each case, she reaches for the nuances of her subject. Never limiting herself to portraying the flat beauty that would simply indicate an attractive view, in these works each location betrays its own quiet quirks and atmosphere with a compelling, almost seductive intimacy. Ness-Cooper achieves this not only with her eye for detail but through her style, which places strong value on a balanced composition and clean lines. She carefully composes her shapes and relies on blocked color and subtle shifts among neutral tones to create scenes that invite the eye to dance. The artist is also adept at switching between a deep perspective and a close study.
Brenda Ness-Cooper was born in Brooklyn and today lives in Staten Island.
