Valreii Tkachenko Gives Historical Vision Contemporary Life

In his striking photographs, Valerii Tkachenko depicts a world that seems to exist outside of time.

While his pictures show contemporary cityscapes and nature scenes, there is also a painterly softness to them that brings what he calls “the historical aspect of common life” into focus. Citing Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz as influences, Tkachenko puts his own distinctive stamp on the finely developed sense of light’s expressive possibilities that one sees in those earlier photographers. In his images, the shifting interplay between light and dark areas creates a dynamic tension, energizing each elegantly peaceful scene.

Tkachenko also incorporates elements found in traditional Chinese style into his works, noting his admiration for the photographer Dong Hong-Oai, who combined the camera with calligraphy to recreate the aura of classical paintings. But what makes his work stand out is his ability to harness his influences into a compelling, thoroughly alive vision that connects immediately with the viewer. “I want the scene to produce an emotional response in others,” he says, “like it did for me.”
