As he plays upon allegorical themes of morality and addiction, the artist who signs his work as ‘Gomesoto’ brings viewers deep into a dreamworld of myth and desire. Gomesoto depicts his subjects immersed within their obsessions, surrounded by a mist of sensuality.
Female forms emerge from the ether, along with arched serpents, fangs bared, and symbolic apples, as the subjects of these arresting works fall into the seduction of their vices. Gomesoto works in oil paints on canvas, using a fast, choppy brushstroke and fluid texture drawn over fields of white to give his compositions an intriguing immediacy. His skill as a painter is extraordinary, giving his works a poignant realism while maintaining a light and playful airiness.
Born in Mexico City, Gomesoto has carried a powerful energy throughout his life, finding himself stifled by the traditional educational system but launching forward to begin his career in advertising as a professional illustrator at age fourteen. He later decided to devote himself to fine art painting and was accepted by the Royal Academy of Art in Malaga, Spain.
