Guillermo Gonzalez Breaks With Tradition in Energetic, Open Canvases

Latin American Guillermo Gonzalez leaps across styles and media in pursuit of his self-professed desire “to break with the traditional [and] disorganize” the meanings of his work. Gonzalez picks up and puts down techniques easily, creating an acrylic Expressionist work of explosive red tangles one moment and a measured Cubist self-portrait the next.

He is most inventive when mixing styles — a photo overlaid with Rothko-tinged bars of color, for example, or a foggy portrait that owes as much to collage practices as it does to Surrealism. However, a few things are constant across Gonzalez’s work: an energetic hand; attention to contrast; and a willingness to obscure meaning rather than reveal it. Though his palette skews towards the dark and earthy, the dynamism of his composition allows the lines and shapes the room they need to breathe, giving the viewer in turn the ability to appreciate their detail. These canvases are busy, but not opaque; they open themselves up to the viewer.
Guillermo Gonzalez hopes to continue working in “alternative and non-traditional media, seeking to combine modern techniques.”
