Quebec Artist Nancy Stella Galianos Dances on Canvas

“I like to think that my art is like a sound that we enjoy hearing and makes us feel good,” says Nancy Stella Galianos. That musical metaphor is particularly appropriate for these canvases, in which the colors pulse with a sense of rhythm. Whether she is working through the subtle variations of one color or juxtaposing a kaleidoscopic variety of neon shades, Galianos uses color as a way to lead the viewer’s eye across her paintings, creating what she calls a “dance floor” on the canvas — seductive patterns that effortlessly pull us in. The artist adds to that rhythmic effect by the ways she applies paint to canvas, using energetic brushstrokes, thickly placing the paint with a knife, or dripping swirls that exist in counterpoint with the more substantial blocks of color on which they rest. The resulting paintings mix energy and restraint, with Galianos’ dynamism harnessed by her controlled sense of color and composition.

Nancy Stella Galianos was born in Montreal, and now lives and works in Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec.
