GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Bergamo Presents New Exhibitions

23 March–24 July 2011
Curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio

From 23 March to 24 July 2011 GAMeC hosts the exhibition ‘CLASS WILL OUT. Contemporary masters VS The young generation’ part of the international project ARTools.

The project, winner of the Europe-wide competition organized by EACEA (Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency), is realized in partnership with three other European museums: Centre International d’Art et du Paysage – Île de Vassivière (France), Malmö Konsthall – Malmö (Sweden), Műcsarnok Kunsthalle – Budapest (Hungary); each museum has developed an educational program related to culture and art.

The exhibition presents the works of 100 students of Bergamo shown together with the works of 9 important contemporary artists: Carla Accardi, Stefano Arienti, Joseph Beuys, Allan Kaprow, William Kentridge, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Thomas Schütte, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.

The students’ work will launch a stimulating, deep and unconventional discussion that will confirm how these great artists—milestones of contemporary art—interface with the new generations.

The exhibition catalogue presents the images of artists’ works together with the works set up by the classes.

The entire project will be shown on the site
On GAMeC’s website is available a section reserved to ARTools.

For the exhibition program Eldorado—dedicated to the most interesting emerging artists on the international scene—GAMeC presents the first solo show to be held at an Italian museum of Matteo Rubbi, winner of the eighth Furla Prize 2011.

The show is introduced by a great spatial intervention leading the viewer into the exhibition room: a huge cover made with fabric remnants is the outcome of a process that mingled abstraction and handicraft; furthermore, most of the exhibition space is painted with a special black paint turning the walls into writable blackboards. The artist invited artists, friends, scholars from the Physics department of the Università degli Studi di Milano and children from Bergamo primary schools to draw on this huge surface with colored chalks, trying to imagine what the subatomic world might look like, elaborating quantum mechanics and the superstring theory.

Throughout the exhibition, the teachers of two technical schools will work together with the visitors who may care to join the project to construct a 1:1 scale reproduction of a section of the Bounty’s hull.

The exhibition’s last work is represented by the complete reprint of the 13 April 1961 issue of the local newspaper ‘L’Eco di Bergamo,’ showing the exceptional news of Jurij Gagarin’s enterprise, the first human being to orbit around the Earth. On April 13 the newspaper will be available in some venues around the city, with the aim to create a space-time gap; afterwards, it will be available just in the museum spaces.

The show will be documented by the first complete monograph on the artist, which will include all the works presented at GAMec.
