Artist Alan Claude Lights Up Cape Cod

After two years in the making, acclaimed New England artist, Alan Claude, has released a series of travel posters depicting seven of the most beloved lighthouses on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. The new body of work follows up the artist’s popular Maine Lighthouse Collection Series. Claude is best known for his retro style and elegant illustrations that pay homage to vintage travel posters of the 1920’s. The strong nostalgic draw that people have to these images has made them successful tools for helping raise funds for lighthouse preservation.

Claude’s artwork is a powerful trigger for storytelling. To understand how people respond to his illustrations, you must listen to them react. These images capture favorite places, places of escape, places of joy and importance. “I am incredibly inspired by how many people approach me with a memory of their engagement, a scattering of a parent’s ashes, or some other pivotal event that happened to them at a lighthouse,” says Claude. The artist and his wife were themselves married at Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine.

Claude wants future generations to have the opportunity to fall in love with these historic icons as well. He has donated numerous prints to the American Lighthouse Foundation and several other lighthouse preservation groups in New England. “They are beautiful and are very well received by our visitors. Fifty percent of the travel poster and calendar sales at the lighthouse help fund our preservation and restoration projects,” says Marty Welt, president of the Friends of Pemaquid Point Light in Bristol, Maine. Two of the lighthouses in the new collection, Highland “Cape Cod” Light in Truro and Race Point Light in Provincetown, will be selling the prints with a portion of the proceeds directly benefiting their fundraising efforts. “We are excited to have Alan Claude’s art displayed in the Keeper’s house at Race Point. It is a welcomed addition to our gift collection and available for purchase to overnight guests,” says Bill Jenkins of Race Point Light on Cape Cod.

Alan Claude has an international fan base, and his Lighthouse Collection recently appeared on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC. Claude will be participating in the 39th Annual Festival of the Arts in Chatham this August. To learn more about Alan Claude and his artwork visit www.alanclaude.com
