National Juried Exhibition Opens June 29 at 440 Gallery

A national juried exhibition on the idea of “home”, curated by artist Joan Bankemper

440 Gallery is pleased to present (home) a national juried group show framed around the word home in parentheses. As an all-encompassing idea that is charged with emotion, (home) may be just an overused advertising meme; (home) also serves as a political knot of identity, security or displacement. James Baldwin wrote “Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition.” Distinguished artist Joan Bankemper is the juror for this midsummer show.

Artists selected for the exhibition: Leah Appel, Michelle Auerbacher, Ronald Butler, Cat Byrnes, Lloyd Campbell, Pauline Chernichaw, Jody Christian, Erin Codey, bdcousineau, Phil Desantis, Lawrence Dobens, Nancy Doniger, Mollie Douthit, Aaron Eidman, Scott Fisk, Amy Fox-Bisagni, Linda Gallop, Fukuko Harris, Diana Leidel, Loretta Lomanto, Min Lu, Kelly McCarthy, Robert Pennington, Corey Phillips-Fowler, Marvine Pierre, Dominic Quintana, James Rose, Tanya Sue Todd, Carole Turbin, Amy Weil, Mary Wright, Mary Younkin

Juror Joan Bankemper has shown with Creative Time, Inc., NY; The New Museum, NY; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, MA; and Wave Hill, Riverdale, NY. Bankemper received grants from The George Sugarman Foundation and the NEA. The McColl Center of Visual Arts awarded her the Gabi Award. Bankemper’s videos and videograms have been exhibited at Leo Castelli Gallery NY; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Detroit Institute of the Arts; The Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan; Marianne Boesky Gallery, NY and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC.

(home) opens Thursday, June 29 at 440 Gallery, 440 Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn, and runs through Sunday, July 30, 2017.
