Tiago Atalaia. New Contemporary Art from Portugal

“Painting is an expression of my inner person,” says the definitively Portuguese fine artist Tiago Atalaia.

Drawn to the spatula and its naturalness, Atalaia maintains that it is his country of origin – particularly its sun, heat, ocean and green vegetation – that inspires the smoothness and vibrancy evident in his powerful works on canvas. Religious motifs, expressive use of light and shadow, brilliant coloration and subtle luminescence characterize his acrylic, oil and mixed media paintings. Atalaia names the master Portuguese artist António Sem, with whom he worked closely for some time, as one of his most profound influences. Packed with emotionality and vigor, faith and ebullience, and all expressed through rich layers of pigment, every piece promises a moment of serene discovery for the viewer.
Tiago Atalaia was born in Lisbon, Portugal and currently lives and paints in Sesimbra-Setúbal, Portugal, teaching at the university in Lisbon. A humanitarian at heart, he donates a portion of every sale of his paintings to Comunidade Vida e Paz (Life and Peace Community), a nonprofit institution dedicated to aiding the recovery of homeless people in Lisbon.
