Barbara Palka Winek Screens, Obsessions and Imago of the Mind

Artist Barbara Palka Winek works in easel painting, watercolor and monotype. Inspired early on to delve into the arts by her father, a recognized Polish painter, it was in his atelier that she began her lifelong love affair with art. In her current mixed media work, organized in cycles of paintings which she names “Screens,” “Obsessions” and “Imago,” myriad visual languages collide.

Palka Winek’s unique address of the human figure, rendered with generous strokes and bold coloration, lends a lyrical quality to her paintings. At times verging on magical realism, the artist counts Latin American literature, especially Marquez and Cortazar, as well as music as having had a profound influence on her work. Richly textured and compositionally dense, Palka Winek maintains that it is “mental structure” in its various modes of perception that comprises the center of her subject matter on canvas.

Barbara Palka Winek is an artist of Polish nationality born in Zabrze, Upper Silesia, Poland. She studied painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and currently lives and works in Cracow.
