Germany artist Rudiger Gau in Portals of Perception

With their balance of freedom and gravity, Rüdiger Gau’s bold abstractions speak meaningfully on an emotionally charged level. At once dark and bright, the intensity of Gau’s lines and geometric forms infuses his works with a controlled vigor and depth of meaning.

Finding inspiration in the works of the Modernist artists of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the “degenerate” artists persecuted by the Nazi regime, Gau paints with a powerful blend of strength and sensitivity, discovering hidden potential in the everyday experiences of life. He builds his paintings in oil or acrylic paints on canvas, moving freely between media and marks as he changes from roughly textured brushstrokes to smooth blocks of color while maintaining his signature style.

Born as World War II raged, in a region of Germany now held by Poland, Gau fled west with his family and was raised in Berlin. Now living in Berlin-Lichterfelde with a summer studio in Berlin-Zehlendorf, Gau exhibits his art internationally in solo and group shows in addition to his career in architecture and interior design.
