Sergio Boldrin’s Unique, Mood-Filled Oil Paintings

Italian artist Sergio Boldrin paints with oils on canvas to create elongated abstract paintings of jesters juxtaposed with the architecture of his home city, Venice. Boldrin is driven to depict and denounce the cultural and social decline of Venice through his art. A mask-maker by trade, he is naturally drawn to the layers of farce, abstraction, and deception found in theatre. He uses the cultural icon of the jester, a farcical figure, as a form of self-portrait, but it is simultaneously a bold statement about his perception of the current decline of culture, suggesting that it is a mockery of what it used to be. A single bright, lurid figure drapes languidly in the center of each piece, often set against stark, staccato architectural abstractions in the background. Each painting captures a unique mood, drawing viewers in with bold brushwork and keeping them engaged by challenging them to confront their perception of reality.

Boldrin still lives in Venice, where he was born. His paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions.
