Vera L.P. Cauwenberghs Slice Of Life

Belgian artist Vera L.P. Cauwenberghs’ slice-of-life oil paintings explore people, nature studies, and landscapes of the earth and sky, all with the same exuberance and attention to detail.

Cauwenberghs’ genius is to flit effortlessly between interior and exterior, small objects and sprawling scenes, and to draw each narrative together with the beating heart within. Her scenes, though they may seem as far removed from civilization as the image of a hummingbird over a flower or a Hawaiian crater alight, always have the imprint of a human presence upon them. With a grounded perspective and a calibrated sense of scale, Cauwenberghs presents us with the exotic ends of the world as an enthused traveler might see it — fresh, fabulous and free.

Though Cauwenberghs paints with a hyperrealistic flair for texture and shape, her saturated colors catapult her works into the realm of stylization. This exultant use of light and tone, coupled with an ability to depict specific places and times, makes each painting raise questions of first-person experience, storytelling, and the passage of time.
