Edward Hartwig (1909-2003) – Keep out Retrospective at the Polish Museum

The course of a private view in the Polish Museum located in the Castle of Rapperswil / Switzerland, Moonblinx Gallery together with proArte launched the Edward Hartwig Retrospective “Keep out” on Saturday, July 4th.

claudius-kruckerEdward Hartwig (1909–2003), the great polish master photographer, would have turned 100 in the present year. Reason enough for a rediscovery of his comprehensive oeuvre. With 70 years of active photography life and his continuous work he significantly influenced polish photography. He is certainly one of its foremost representatives. His art is of inspiration to artists until today. The heading of the exhibition relates to a saying of one of Hartwig’s closest friends, who once stated: “Edward always enters doors and buildings with signs on the doors stating: „Keep out!“ This very special character trait is reflected in his variable photographic styles amongst others incorporated in the precious selection of vintage prints currently being exhibited in the Castle of Rapperswil. The well attended private view was opened by Anna Buchmann, Managing Director of the Polish Museum and Claudius Krucker, representative of St. Gallen University’s Arts Club proArte, who welcomed the audience including representatives of the city council, the press, private and public collections and Moonblinx Gallery. Words of gratitude were addressed to the supporters of the exhibition: Canton St. Gallen (Promotion of Cultural Affairs), the City of Rapperswil and Jona, Polenplus-Magazine (P+). The welcome address was followed by Arts historian Anna Nowak’s sophisticatedly conducted introduction to Edward Hartwig’s complex and pioneering work. Anna Nowak highly valued Moonblinx Gallery’s indulgent commitment in rediscovering the treasure of Hartwig’s photographical art. The private view was accompanied by a lyric Jazz-performance of the internationally renowned musicians Felix Huber (piano) and Witek Kornacki (Saxophone / Clarinet). Rounding out the event, Moonblinx Gallery proudly announced the release of the recently established large sized “Edward Hartwig Centenary Calendar 2010” containing 12 carefully selected masterpieces of Edward Hartwig’s work.
