Kraige Block, Executive Director of Throckmorton, says, “Christian Cravo has always been drawn to the primal foundations of life and it’s natural that his current journey was to Africa. As a third-generation artist and a native of Bahia, a costal Brazilian city known for its rich heritage of African culture, Christian’s latest photographs underscore his innate sensitivity to the peoples of Africa. His new series places him squarely in the center of the artistic evolution in this area of Brazil.”
“Christian Cravo’s talents were first apparent in 2000 with his “Irredentos” series, which portrayed the life and faith of the Brazilian backlands. His next series in 2005, “Autrement,” was a gorgeous collection of images of black culture in the state of Bahia. Cravo has also devoted an entire decade to producing a defining project, “In the Gardens of Eden,” portraying the people of Haiti and their struggles and search for redemption through mysticism.”
“Shadow & Light consists of photographs that appear highly stylized, evoking ‘modernism,’ and capturing the basics of life in recurring patterns that help us to see the subtleties in Nature’s beauty, through detail shots.
“Cravo’s compositions are highlighted by a masterful use of light and shadow. His images are further enhanced by the use of platinum prints. Platinum, while expensive, is warm and permanent. The directness of Cravo’s work, and the power of platinum, gives this latest body of work a contemporary feel. Africa, known as the cradle of life, is viewed in a new and fresh way.”
