NordArt opened on Saturday 4th June. Now with a dozen years behind it, the 12th summer exhibition brings together painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, and installations from 245 artists in 55 countries. Their works speak not only for themselves, but also and especially interacting with, and against the background of, the unique stage of the old Carlshütte foundry buildings in Büdelsdorf – developing new perspectives in their mutual association and disassociation. NordArt 2011 remains open until October 2nd.

The first NordArt took place in 1999, since then it has established itself as Northern Europe’s largest annual art exhibition. The NordArt is a work of art in its own right and is designed as such each year. More than 200 international artists, selected by a jury, present a comprehensive panorama of contemporary art. Each individual work not only speaks for itself but also creates new perspectives when seen juxtaposed against the unique backdrop offered by the Carlshütte and the adjacent historical sculpture park. NordArt is accompanied by concerts, readings, film presentations and other cultural events.
Exhibition area: 22,000 square metres in the former Carlshütte foundry; 400 sqm in the ACO Wagenremise coach house; 80,000 sqm historical park and links with public places in the town of Büdelsdorf.
NordArt is now northern Europe’s biggest art exhibition, organised by the Kunstwerk Carlshütte, the non-profit initiative of the ACO Group and the cities of Büdelsdorf and Rendsburg. This year’s exhibition, the twelfth of its kind, runs from 12 June to 3 October and features work by 220 artists from 57 countries, including painting, graphics, photography, video, sculpture, objets d’art and installations. One third of the entries came from Germany, and this is reflected in the makeup of the exhibition. The display space includes a 22,000 square metre former foundry, 60,000 square metres of parkland, other buildings, and public squares in the town of Büdelsdorf. The exhibition also features the highly respected NordArt Symposium, bringing together different generations of artists from around the world to engage in debate, make new acquaintances, and work. The results are then displayed in the Carlshütte and the sculpture park.
