Koplin Del Rio Gallery announce a group exhibition titled “Hangin’ Together” guest curated by Kerry James Marshall. Open through September 4th.
Having shown regularly at Koplin Del Rio gallery since the early 1980’s, internationally known artist Kerry James Marshall was invited to guest curate an exhibition featuring contemporary artists of his choice. As a guest curator he has brought a unique vision to the installation incorporating strong themes of social commentary and multi-media works.
The title, “Hangin’ Together” implies the kind of relaxed, easy going social gathering embodied in end of Summer reveries. Unburdened by a weighty theme, the show introduces work by two very recent graduates, Suné Woods and Stacy Mohammed, and showcases emerging artists David Lozano and Robert Pruitt, alongside long time practitioners Louis Serrano and Candida Alvarez. These artists represent a wide range of aesthetic and subjective approaches, but I believe, “Hang Together” very well. – Kerry James Marshall
Painter and Conceptual artist Candida Alvarez received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1997 and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Some of the venues to have exhibited Alvarez’s art include: Longwood Arts Project (Bronx, New York); Betty Rymer Gallery, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Lehman College Art Gallery (New York City); Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago); Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago); Contemporary Art Museum (Houston, Texas); Museum of the City of Skopje (Skopje, Macedonia); and the Chicago Cultural Center. Her art is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, El Museo Del Barrio, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and others.
Multi-Media Abstract artist David Lozano received an MFA from University of Illinois, Chicago in 2003 and currently teaches drawing, sculpture and video arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sublime subjects, pop aesthetics and the beautiful mundane clash with the erotic in Lozano’s lush paintings. He has received a number of awards and grants, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant Award in 2004. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the Midwestern US and Texas.
Born in Trinidad and the daughter of an East Indian Muslim father who converted to Pentecostalism and a mixed heritage Catholic mother, Stacy Mohammed’s paintings are an attempt to explore the sacred and the silent and to try to get at a deeper understanding of what faith means to the artist. She is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships and has shown work on the East Coast since 1998. Mohammed is a recent MFA recipient from the Boston University School of Visual Arts in 2010.
Figurative painter Robert Pruitt received an MFA in 2003 from the University of Texas at Austin and resides in Chicago, Illinois. Since then he has shown extensively in the U.S. including the 2006 Whitney Biennial (New York, New York), P.S. 1/MoMA (New York, New York), The Studio Museum in Harlem, (New York, New York) the Contemporary Art Museum Houston (Houston, Texas), and the Dallas Museum of Art (Dallas, Texas). His work has also been exhibited at galleries in Warsaw, Poland; London, England; and Siegen, Germany. In 2007 Pruitt was awarded a Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship Grant. He has work in the collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Robert Pruitt lives in Chicago.
Artist Luis Serrano was born in Ecuador and has lived in Los Angeles since the mid 1960’s. His paintings and drawings strive to find a balance between the physical and spiritual worlds by tackling the first-hand experience of nature and the visible order and chaos found within the natural world. Serrano earned an MFA from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in 1981. His work has been shown extensively in solo and group exhibitions nationally since 1978. In 1985 he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in Painting and was a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award Nominee in 2000.
Born in Montréal, raised in Florida, Suné Woods currently lives in San Francisco. Woods is a multi-disciplinary artist working in photography, collage, and video. Woods uses the body as a site to think about histories: passed on, forgotten, or imagined. Woods has exhibited her work nationally at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Lowe Art Museum, The African-American Museum, School of the International Center of Photography, Time Life Building, and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. Woods received her MFA from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco in 2010.
