Symbolic Collection Presents Hasselblad Laureate Award Winning Photographer of “Botanica Magnifica” Jonathan Singer

Symbolic Collection announces the unveiling of a world-class exhibition of photography by Jonathan Singer to be showcased on July 2, 2010 for the first time on the West Coast at the Symbolic Collection gallery in Sorrento Valley. Known for his exquisite large-scale prints in Botanica Magnifica, a five-volume set of books that feature single blooms of 250 of the world’s rarest plants created and presented only for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

A New Jersey podiatrist specializing in limb salvage, Singer’s career took a turn in 2005 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and could no longer perform surgery. He turned to an earlier life love of photography that led him to discover a new life’s passion. With ambition and a natural talent, Singer introduced his work to Marc Hachadourian, the Curator of Glasshouse Collections, New York Botanical Garden, and shortly after to Dr. W. John Kress, the Curator of Botany, National Museum of Natural History, and from there, he became an overnight sensation acclaimed for “marrying art and science” using a technique synonymous with old world master paintings.

“Just as the finest classical painter attempted to make his brush stroke invisible, I attempt to capture these botanical specimens with a clarity and humility becoming an instrument serving a higher force,” said Singer. “Many of the most unusual species seen in Botanica Magnifica seem to be alien life forms but really are true treasures of our home planet.”

Singer is the recipient of a Hasselblad Prize Laureate, an international photography prize regarded as one of the most coveted awards in the field today. He is also honored with the 2009 Carl Linnaeus Silver Medalist for merging art and science from the Swedish Royal Academy of Science, which is an award on the same level of a Nobel Prize.

In September 2009, Singer joined with Dr. Kress and Hachadourian to create a collaborative book called Botanica Magnifica: Portraits of the World’s Most Extraordinary Flowers and Plants (Abbeville Press, September 2009). The book features photographs by Singer and text by Dr. Kress and Hachadourian. Copies of the book will be available on the opening night at Symbolic Collection.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for San Diegan’s to access one of the most exclusive photographers in the world and experience an exhibition of Singer’s work first hand, including 50 of his photographs,” said Ryan Crowley, Director and Curator of Symbolic Collection. “We are honored that Singer, a photographer of this caliber – the Rembrandt of photography – will be joining us for the event and guests will have the rare opportunity to meet him. His contribution to art history and meteoric rise to fame are nothing short of spectacular. His images will live on forever.”
