Thamer Dawood Sudani, the extraordinary Iraqi artist and graphic designer who was forced to flee battle-torn Baghdad five years ago after being randomly targeted by militants, and now lives and works in the Philadelphia area, will open his first American gallery show at noon, Sunday, January 10, at the Rosenfeld Gallery in Olde City.
Sudani, 43, will be joined by his wife, Montaha, and children as he exhibits an extraordinary collection of wonderfully optimistic, deftly-handled personal images. Richard Rosenfeld, the innovative gallery founder-operator, says the landmark Sudani show will be a dramatically graphic demonstration of the transcendent power of the creative spirit and one family’s remarkable quest for freedom. Sudani’s long and unexpected journey to the Philadelphia region began when his talent was recognized in “Peace In Our Hands,” a joint Jordanian-Iraqi wall-mural project (he and his family moved to Jordan after fleeing Iraq) by Rosemary Lane, a contributing curator for the Delaware Museum of Art.
