Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art Announces New Officers for the Board of Trust and Nine Members

The Board of Trustees of Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art has recently announced new officers for the board of trustees and seven new members.

“All of these new trustees bring to Cheekwood a wealth of experience with issues of great importance to our institution,” says Jack Becker, PhD, president of Cheekwood. “They represent the values of intellectual discipline, social involvement and principled leadership that have been the mark of Cheekwood’s board throughout the years.”

The Executive Committee of Cheekwood’s board of trustees is: William F. Andrews, Chairman (Director, Corrections Corporation of America), Hal Pennington, Vice Chairman (Chairman of the Board, Genesco, Inc.), Don MacLeod, Treasurer (President, OER Partners), Bradley S. Karro, Secretary (President & CEO, Hillcote Advisors), Lee Ann Ingram (Community Volunteer), Amy Atkinson (VP, Marketing & Public Relations, Gaylord Hotels), David I. Obolensky, (SVP, UBS), Peggy Craig, (Client Advisor, SunTrust Bank), William “Bill” F. Hagerty (Principal, Hagerty Peterson), Paul Sternberg, (G.W. Hale Professor & Chair, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Vanderbilt School of Medicine, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Adult Health Affairs), and Elizabeth Nichols (CEO, Taigan).

The new members, who will serve three year terms expiring December 31, 2013, are:

Mr. Jack O. Bovender, Jr.
Jack O. Bovender, Jr. served as Hospital Corporation of America’s (HCA) Chairman and Chief Executive Officers from January 2002 through December 2009. Over the years, he has held various posts at HCA including serving as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and as President and Chief Executive Office. Prior to his retirement from 1994 to 1997, Mr. Bovender held several senior level positions with HCA. Mr. Bovender began his hospital administrative career as a lieutenant in the United States Navy stationed at the Naval Reserve Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duke University in 1967 and his master’s degree in hospital administration from Duke University in 1969.

Mr. Barney D. Byrd
Barney D. Byrd is President and CEO of Gen Cap America (GCA), a private investment firm headquartered in Nashville and specializing in acquisitions and recapitalizations of middle market businesses. Mr. Byrd founded GCA in 1985 and is responsible for the firm’s strategic planning and investment policy. Mr. Byrd received a B.A. from the University of Tennessee, a J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law and an M.B.A. from the Wharton Graduate School of Business.

Dr. Andre L. Churchwell
Dr. Andre L. Churchwell is the Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute. He also serves as the Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, the Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and the Associate Dean for Diversity in Graduate Medical Education and Faculty Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Churchwell has received numerous honors including the Emory University School of Medicine Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award and the Walter R. Murray, Jr. Distinguished Alumnus Award, as well as consecutive listings in The Best Doctors in America, Midwest Region. Dr. Churchwell received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.

Mr. William W. DeCamp, Jr.
William W. “Bill” DeCamp is Senior Vice President of Commercial and Private Banking at Pinnacle Financial Partners. He has over 24 years of financial services experience in commercial banking, private banking, investment consulting and insurance. Prior to joining Pinnacle, he was First Vice President of Private Banking at National Bank of Commerce. He has also held executive level positions with J. C. Bradford & Co. and First American National Bank. He is the immediate past-president and current board member of the Exchange Club of Nashville. He has also volunteered on the board of the Antique & Garden Show of Nashville, the Middle Tennessee Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Prevent Blindness Tennessee. Mr. DeCamp received a B.A. from Washington and Lee University.

Mrs. Peggy Kinnard
Peggy Kinnard has lived in Nashville for over thirty years. Involved in several fundraising efforts benefitting Cheekwood, she has served as Chairman of the Antiques and Garden Show and Chairman of The Swan Ball Auction. Currently, she is serving as Chairmen of the Antiques and Garden Show Executive Advisory Committee. Additionally, Peggy has served as Chairman of the Frist Gala, benefitting The Frist Center for The Visual Arts, and as Steeplechase Chairman benefitting Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. She has also been a member of The Community Foundation Women’s Fund Board. She is currently a member of The Frist Center for the Visual Arts Development Committee.

Mrs. Elise S. “Lisa” Small
Lisa Small is a native of Nashville and long time community volunteer. An alumna of Leadership Nashville, she is a past President of the Temple and currently serves on the board of Fifty Forward and the advisory board of Youth Villages. Mrs. Small has taught English, first full-time at Hillwood High and then part-time at University School of Nashville, and has tutored high school students for over 35 years. She is an avid traveler and art collector. Her lifelong interest in art led to her efforts to create the Temple Arts Festival, a fundraiser for the Temple, which she has chaired since its inception six years ago. Mrs. Small is a graduate of Smith College.

Ms. Johnna Benedict Watson
Johnna Benedict Watson is President and CEO of the Pinnacle Group, a firm specializing in group insurance and employee benefits which she formed in 1991. Ms. Watson received a B.A. from Louisiana State University and the University of Southern Mississippi in Journalism. She also received a Masters in Conceptual Understanding from the Wharton Executive MBA Insurance and Finance School. Ms. Watson serves on the Board of Directors for the Nashville Symphony and is active in the Middle Tennessee chapters of the United Way and the Boy Scouts of America as well as the Tennessee Baptist Children’s home.

Mrs. Anne Whetsell
Shortly after moving to Nashville in 1983, Anne Whetsell became Associate Director of the EAR Foundation at Baptist Hospital where she was in charge of public relations and development and was instrumental in the creation of the EAR Foundation Balloon Classic. In addition to her work at the EAR Foundation, Mrs. Whetsell became involved in volunteer work at Harding Academy, Harpeth Hall and Westminster School, now Currey-Ingram Academy, where she served as vice-president of the board and on the capital campaign committee. She is also a member of the Junior League; she served as President of the board of Travelers Rest and was on the board of WPLN for four years. Mrs. Whetsell is a past chairman of the Antiques & Garden Show, and she co-chaired the Swan Ball in 1996. She received a B.A. degree from Oklahoma University and an M.A. from Columbia University, with both degrees in Speech Pathology.

Mrs. Emily Perkins Zerfoss
Emily Perkins Zerfoss founded and co-owned The Paper Place, a retail stationery outlet in Nashville, from 1985 until 1993. She currently works at Martin & Zerfoss, Inc. Mrs. Zerfoss has served on the boards of Harpeth Hall School, St. Luke’s Community House and Mental Health Association of Nashville. She has also been actively involved in and/or chaired various activities for Cumberland Science Museum, Rape and Sexual Abuse Center, Cumberland Heights, Tennessee State Museum, Eve of Janus Benefit, The Swan Ball, Tennessee Historical Society, Prevent Blindness, The Ensworth School as well as serving on the Vestry of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Zerfoss received a B.A. in Art History from Vanderbilt University.
