440 Gallery Present Collage in Photography Lecture and Me, Myself and Eye Jazz

Me, Myself and Eye: 440 Gallery’s avant-garde music series curated by Michel Gentile Sunday, May 7 @ 4:40 PM Suggested donation $10

Technically simple yet artistically diverse, collage has invaded every modern medium. Barbara Confino will trace the history of collage as a radical–even subversive–medium to show how it broke with the esthetics of the past to inform those of the present.

Emphasizing the impact that collage has on contemporary photography and mixed media, Confino will cite examples from painting, photography, cinema, installation and conceptual art. She will argue that the Collage Spirit is the most fundamental artistic strategy of our time; one that most closely approximates the creative process itself. She will discuss the ways in which collage historically has been both an insider and an outsider art form. As such it has been from the start, a people’s art, easy to access and rich in possibilities.

Barbara Confino has taught collage at the International Center for Photography and through private instruction in Brooklyn. She has written about collage and other media for ICP and the New York Photo Review, where she was managing editor. Her own artwork is housed in many international collections, including the British Museum, the Staatsbibliotek of Berlin, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and the Brooklyn Museum.
