HEADLANDS CENTER FOR ARTS PRESENTS NEW PERFORMANCE-BASED WORK BY BRENT GREEN AT UNTITLED, SAN FRANCISCO ART FAIR

Headlands Center for the Arts presents a new work by multidisciplinary artist Brent Green at the inaugural Untitled, San Francisco art fair at Pier 70 in San Francisco, January 13‒15, 2017. Untitled, San Francisco is the first iteration of the Untitled, Art fair outside Miami where it originated in 2012.

Green’s new work, Study for Lesser Satellites (2016), comprises three “violin dresses”—hoop-skirt-style structures made of wood, cloth, steel, and violin and cello strings—that can be worn and, when rotated, played by bowing the strings. Intended as sculptural installation, set design, and performance costumes alike, Green’s violin dresses invite multiple forms of inquiry, interpretation, and engagement. Green’s installation will be on view at the Headlands Center for the Arts’ booth, and performances will take place intermittently during the run of the fair.

Brent Green is a self-taught visual artist and filmmaker. Green’s films have often been screened with live musical accompaniment in both film and art settings including the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA), Hammer Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Sundance Film Festival, Walker Art Center, Wexner Center for the Arts, The J. Paul Getty Museum and The Kitchen. His sculptural work and large-scale installations are often displayed in conjunction with his animated films, most recently with solo exhibitions at 21c/Art Without Walls, Arizona State University Art Museum, BAM/PFA, Diverseworks Houston, and Site Santa Fe. His artwork is in permanent collections including the American Folk Art Museum, BAM/PFA, Hammer Museum, and MoMA.
