For DVANDE (Daniel V. Anderson), medium is a flexible, fascinating creative tool, full of possibility. DVANDE creates intriguing modern bas-reliefs with a technique he calls “canvas sculpting,” in which the contours of the canvas’s surface itself interplay with oil paint and mixed media laid on top.
That paint comes in waves of blocked color, often primary and bold, but expanding into a variety of palettes and treatments which act as punctuation and emphasis rather than the main event, enhancing the sculpted depth and movement within the works. DVANDE’s forms are chiseled and geometric, although a close look reveals all the organic touches of truly handmade art. The artist draws on Cubism, Futurism, and a hint of Abstract Expressionism, but the final product is a more streamlined exploration of what line can do. In these works, it becomes a barrier, a limitation, and a meeting point – sometimes in the same piece.
DVANDE was born in New Jersey and today works from Hoboken. In addition to works on canvas, he is currently planning large-scale and installation art. He describes his work as creative energy given a form in which a confluence of influences has “collided.”
