Fernando Braune’s works start out as black-and-white photographs, but that is just their beginning.
Braune takes his shots of people and subjects them to several transformations. After treating them with watercolor, pastels and crayon, he digitizes his images and then prints them on 100% cotton papers. The resulting pieces combine the relaxed compositions of street photography with the neon colors of digital. “I have always tried to create a new reality,” the artist says, “so that the photographed people step into a different and new world, decontextualized from the reality they come from.”
An author as well as an artist, Braune is a master at combining two color schemes in his work, layering his bright colors over the black-and-white images to create a multi-layered environment. That feeling of double exposure gives his image a sense of reflection, filtering the world he looks at through a personal point of view. “I work on the edge between tradition and the contemporary world,” he says, “and this balance is the thread I never intend to lose.”
