AD20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries combined with The Boston Print Fair takes place March 21-24, 2013, at The Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston’s South End. AD20/21 features 36 galleries specializing in modern to contemporary furniture, glass, ceramics and decorative arts alongside a wide array of fine art. The Print Fair features 14 dealers in American, European and Asian fine prints, drawings, photography and other works on paper. For show and exhibitor information, call 617-363-0405 or visit www.AD2021.com.
The show opens Thursday, March 21, with a Gala Preview from 5:30-8:30pm, with all proceeds benefiting Boston Architectural College (BAC), New England’s largest independent, accredited college of spatial design. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Boston collector and philanthropist John P. Axelrod at 6:00pm at the Gala. Last year’s Gala was attended by more than 600 people and raised over $100,000. The show continues Friday, March 22 from 1-8pm, Saturday, March 23 from 11am-8pm, and Sunday March 24 from 11am-5pm. Weekend admission is $15, under 12 free, and includes a complimentary color show catalog, admission to all special programs at the fair. Valet and discount parking is available, and the show café is catered by Jules Catering.
“The combination of AD20/21 and the Boston Print Fair has worked very well in introducing new buyers to print dealers and galleries,” comments co-producer Tony Fusco. ” We are introducing traditional art patrons as well as a new, sophisticated, design-conscious audience to the world of prints. Prints are a more affordable way of purchasing original art for many people, and the diversity of subjects and styles in the show means there will be something for everyone.”
Last year, Maine Antique Digest reported, “The Boston Print Fair is a logical and easy melding of the enterprises (and goes) perfectly with the Modernist and post- Modernist sensibilities and styles that the AD 20/21 dealers’ wares represent.”
New galleries this year include Boston’s newest contemporary galleries, Adelson Galleries Boston and Sloane Merrill Gallery; furniture dealer America Dural of Cambridge, headed by interior designer Phillip Jude Miller; Charon Kransen Arts (NY), one of the country’s leading dealers in contemporary jewelry from across the globe; FitzRoy Knox and Franklin 54, both galleries from New York City; Oehme Graphics, a contemporary print publisher from Colorado, and The Tolman Collection of Tokyo and New York, specializing in Japanese prints. Returning galleries include Mid-Century Modern dealers Bridges Over Time (NY), Machine Age (MA) and Glen Leroux Antiques (NY). Landry & Arcari (MA) will offer modern to contemporary Oriental rugs, and custom furniture makers 60Nobscot Home (MA) and Javier Ybarra (MA) will offer their work. Outstanding fine art galleries returning to the show include Childs Gallery (MA), Martha Richardson Fine Art (MA), Center Street Studio (MA), and Susanna J. Fichera (ME). A special exhibition throughout the weekend at the show will feature contemporary furniture designer by alumni furniture makers of North Bennett Street School in Boston.
The only show of its kind in New England, AD20/21 features fine art and design in all disciplines representing major design movements of the 20th century. Notably, the show also includes outstanding 21st century fine art, prints, studio furniture, glass, ceramics, decorative arts, jewelry, photography, and more, bridging the gap between historical styles and contemporary works, and deepening collectors’ appreciation for both.
The Cyclorama provides the ideal venue for this exciting show. Built in 1884 to house an enormous panorama painting (a “cyclorama”) of the Battle of Gettysburg, the large circular rotunda and adjacent salons encourage visitors to both linger and wander throughout the show. The historic structure is the heart of the Boston Center for the Arts complex, which boasts four theatres, a gallery, the Boston Ballet School, 50 artist studios and other facilities. There are more than a dozen “hot” restaurants and nightspots within a five-minute walk.
The Cyclorama has become a mecca in Boston for the arts, and is also the location for Fusco & Four’s annual Boston International Fine Art Show (BIFAS), which has been running for 16 years. Fusco & Four also re-launched the Ellis Boston Antiques Show at The Cyclorama last year. For more information on all three shows, visit www.BostonArtFairs.com
