Brooklyn, NY – You take your kids to an art exhibit, and they squirm, get bored in 3 minutes and want to leave– or not. Maybe your kids are the ones dragging you into museums.

Either way, 440 Gallery offers something geared specifically for your kids: “Young Artists @ 440,” which is part of the ” Sundays @ 440″ series of informal events held at the gallery. This free, hands-on art workshop is open to children from ages 4 to 12, with supervision by a parent or guardian. Your children will be guided by Vicki Behm, a 440 Gallery artist member with over ten years of experience as an arts educator. Each workshop will focus on the artwork in the current exhibition at 440 Gallery. Your young artist will participate in discussions about the artwork and then try their hand at creating their own artwork based on these discussions and observations. All materials will be provided. No reservations are required. Participation is based on “first-come, first-served.” Space is limited, so early arrival is recommended.
During the upcoming session on Sunday, October 28, 4:40-6:00 PM, young artists will be inspired by the artwork created by Richard Eagan and Philomena Marano in Art of the Coney Island Hysterical Society, the current exhibition. They will discuss the rides, signs, graphics, numbers, shapes, colors they see in the artwork, then go on a treasure hunt and sketch details. Then, using colored paper, stencils, scissors, colored pencils and glue, young artists will create their own Coney Island ride or amusement. They will learn how to arrange shapes to create positive and negative spaces and a dynamic composition.
