Cordell Taylor creates sculptures that represent the sharp broken edges of cliff faces and rock formations. Working with block forms, Taylor cuts and fits the shapes together, building compositions into pieces that are seemingly honed from one piece of stone, an impression increased by the way the elements intersect and impede each other’s physical space.
Smoothly square and sharply graceful, his sculptures are careful articulations of manmade material that parallel the growth and evolution of nature and man. Well traveled, Taylor finds inspiration in the art and architecture that he discovers on his journeys, but his grand motivation is the exquisite landscapes of the American west. The sculptor’s artistic process is patient and cumulative; working from wood models, he crafts steel to suit his commission and artistic ideals alike. “My goal, with each piece of work I create, is to enhance the imagination and the curiosity of those who may come upon it, offering an interesting and captivating visual experience that identifies the building or the neighborhood and invites the viewer to return,” he explains.
A Utah native, Taylor has exhibited his work widely through North America and Europe, and is collected by major international institutions.
