Swiss artist Walter B. Probst has the soul of a sculptor in bronze and has utilized his talents for forty-five years. Most recently, he has enhanced his creative repertoire with the computer as a means of manipulating original painted imagery. Due to his background, these oversized digital prints retain a striking sculptural appearance, while exploring intense color and pattern. Probst’s latest artworks feature a central fanlike motif that radiates towards the edge of the composition, while a vigorous and dense scheme of shapes and lines lie beneath it. These abstract images are hypnotic and inspirational, pulling in our attention with their bold lines and dazzling us with intricate detail and pattern. The intention is to “spiritualize matter and to materialize the spirit,” he explains. “As a person I am a mediator between the heavens and earth.”

Walter B. Probst is a widely traveled man who has widespread inspirations which include Aboriginal music, ornamental blacksmithing, batik textiles, and even crystals. He continues to experiment with a variety of media and exhibits his work frequently.

The gallery is well-known for adding renewed dynamism and relevance to the Auckland art scene, and looking at the works they are sharing with us now, that fact is no surprise.
The exhibitions open on May 18, 2012 and run until June 7, 2012. The opening reception will take place on the evening of Thursday, May 24, 2012. Entrance is free and anyone with an interest in gaining a new perspective on life and art is warmly encouraged to attend and meet some of the artists whose works make up the show.
