Michael Lierly paints memory from memory. His goal is to infuse each work with reality, though not necessarily realism. Both his figurative and abstract works deal with reconstructing memory in a way that creates an ambiguous symbolism which renders the often complex concept a universal one. Borrowing techniques from great masters such as El Greco and Tintoretto, Lierly informs his work with a powerful contemporary bent. While his figures are maneuvered in a true Mannerist format, they also maintain a strong Romantic feel reminiscent of William Blake. His large abstract canvases are enlivened by the certainty of a setting or rising sun, and all his paintings are filled with essential truths evoked by expressionistic color stains. Lierly’s familiarity with his artistic heritage is unquestionable, and while the artist’s revelations are personal, his story converges with that of humankind as a whole.

Lierly’s resume is extensive. Having earned a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts, he also has taught at university level for the last several years. He has had numerous exhibitions in Indiana and Arkansas.

In addition, New Zealand’s Flagstaff Gallery is bringing the works of some of their exciting artists to New York at Agora Gallery in Made in New Zealand: An exhibition of Fine Art from New Zealand. The gallery is well-known for adding renewed dynamism and relevance to the Auckland art scene, and looking at the works they are sharing with us now, that fact is no surprise.
The exhibitions open on May 18, 2012 and run until June 7, 2012. The opening reception will take place on the evening of Thursday, May 24, 2012. Entrance is free and anyone with an interest in gaining a new perspective on life and art is warmly encouraged to attend and meet some of the artists whose works make up the show.
