Videobrasil Residency Network 2012 schedule

Carla Zaccagnini is the first of the residency-winning artists at the 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil to undertake her exchange. This month, she will travel to Flic-en-Flac, in the Mauritius, where she will stay until April in a residency at the pARTage, a facility established in 2003 by local artists. Carla, who won a prize at the Festival for her installation BRAVO-RADIO-ATLAS-VIRUS-OPERA (2010), will take the occasion to complete a trilogy she started in 2003, and which already comprises two video diptychs made in partnership with other artists.

The first piece in the trilogy, made in collaboration with the Brazilian Wagner Morales and the Portuguese Sofia Ponte, shows Atlantic Ocean waters as they hit the shores of Brazil and Portugal at the same time; the second piece repeats the operation with Pacific waters on beaches in Chile and New Zealand, shot respectively by Helmut Batista and Eric Holowacs. On this diptych there is a large difference between the locations’ time zones—one video takes place in the late afternoon, and the other, at dawn. The video’s duration (60′, looped) helps emphasize the narrative dilution the artist wishes to convey. The last diptych is in line with the premises of the pARTage residency program, which encourages artistic takes on the local environment. The piece will feature Indian Ocean waters on the shores of the Mauritius and Australia.

Two more prize winners at the Festival will begin their residencies in the first half this year: the Brazilian Dirceu Maués will be at the Vrije Academie Werkplaats voor Beeldende Kunsten, in the Hague, Netherlands, from May to June; and the Bolivian Claudia Joskowicz will stay at the Sacatar Institute, in Itaparica, Bahia, from May to August 2012. Next March, Gabriel Mascaro, who won a prize for his The Adventures of Paulo Bruscky, will travel to the Videoformes Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France, which offers the residency the artist will undertake later this year.

The pARTage and Sacatar Institute residency prizes are offered in partnership with the Prince Claus Fund (Netherlands). The Videoformes residency is backed by the French Consulate in São Paulo and Alliance Française.

As an organization dedicated to fostering contemporary art production and diffusion, Videobrasil believes that the multicultural experiences made possible by international artist and curator transit is crucially conducive to a deeper artistic debate. Dedicated mainly to art produced in the geopolitical South of the planet—Latin America, Africa, Oceania, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean—Associação Cultural Videobrasil, in partnership with SESC-SP, will increase its actions in this field in 2012, reformulating and expanding its residency programs. Videobrasil takes it that at a time when art and society, culture and politics interrelate in a particularly intense way, enabling artistic agents to circulate is a key strategy in fostering reflection and production. Details on the expansion and new developments in our artist and curator international exchange program will be disclosed on Videobrasil’s channels soon.
