Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Insights, the annual design series presented by the Walker Art Center and AIGA, begins March 1 and runs every Tuesday through March 29. The series brings the world’s leading graphic designers to the Twin Cities to share their work, process, and experience. Lectures begin at 7 p.m. in the Walker Cinema.
Insights 2011 kicks off with Kevin Quealy of The New York Times graphics department (March 1). Subsequent programs feature Michael Hart of Minneapolis-based agency Mono (March 8); James Goggin, whose London-based studio Practise has worked with clients such as Tate Modern and Channel 4 (March 15); Julie Beeler, award-winning interactive designer from Portland’s Second Story (March 22); and three-time National Magazine Award finalist Casey Caplowe of the socially-engaged integrated media platform Good (March 29).
The Insights series began in 1986 when the Walker partnered with AIGA Minnesota to create what would become a yearly tradition. Since then, the series has featured a consistent mix of emerging talent and established industry leaders. Speakers have included local legends Peter Seitz (1986) and Joe Duffy (1991); Massimo Vignelli (1993) creator of the iconic New York City subway system maps and signage as well as identity programs for companies such as American Airlines and Bloomingdale’s; celebrated book designer Chip Kidd (1992, 2006); Gael Towey (2000), chief creative officer at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia; Matthew Carter (1995), prolific type designer and 2010 MacArthur Fellow; Jop van Bennekom (2007), iconoclastic creative director and publisher of style magazines Fantastic Man and The Gentlewoman; and dozens more. Series tickets for Insights 2011 are $90 ($60 Walker/AIGA members); individual tickets $20 ($15; $10 students).
