Local Detroit artists housed in the iconic Russell Industrial Center have come together to form the MOHO Arts District Workshops. This collaboration will allow residents to take advantage of the growing Detroit art scene by participating art classes and workshops.
MOHO Arts District Workshops will highlight local artists and the Detroit art scene by offering classes to Metro Detroit residents who are interested in a variety of art forms. Classes require no past experience and are open to participants of all ages at an affordable price. The first workshops to be offered in July 2010 will focus on life drawing and photography.
“There is an amazing amount of artistic talent working in the Russell Industrial Center. Students attending a MOHO Arts District workshop will have the chance to learn from these working artists, some of which are known internationally in the art world and have an avid following,” said co-founder Robert Stewart.
Diane Whitehead, famed for her wall installations that display the tension of human forms and their surroundings, will teach a three week class on life portrait drawing. The course will cover seeing and composition through line, form, volume and light on large formats. Classes will be held at the Russell Industrial Center from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Mondays (July 12, 19 & 26) or Tuesdays (July 13, 20 & 27). Interested participants can sign up for three sessions for $50.00 or pay $25.00 per session. To sign up, contact Diane at [email protected].
For Metro Detroiters interested in photography, local photographer Robert Stewart will instruct three different workshops in July. Stewart currently teaches at the College of Creative Studies, Macomb Community College and Henry Ford Community College. Workshops include: “Basics of Digital Photography,” on Tuesday, July 15 or Thursday, July 17 from 6-8 p.m.; “Mystery Location Street Shoot,” on Sunday, July 18 from 1-4 p.m. and “Macro Photography: Flowers” workshop on Sunday, July 25 from 1-4 p.m. which includes a trip to Belle Isle along with class room instructions. Sessions are $20 in advance or $25 to walk-in. To sign up, contact Robert at [email protected].
MOHO Arts District Workshops will feature new sessions each month. Most workshops will meet at the Russell Industrial Center’s Building 2 – east entrance – 3rd floor, located at 1610 Clay Street, Detroit, MI, before heading to on-site locations. Walk-ins are welcome, but it is advised that participants contact the instructor beforehand to receive last minute information or changes in the workshop times and locations.
