Fotografiska Photography Museum Opened in Stockholm

Fotografiska opened May 21 2010. Located in the Stockholm Harbor, Fotografiska is founded to compliment Sweden’s public museums with a space dedicated exclusively to contemporary photography.

Fotografiska is housed in an industrial building dating from 1906 in the Art Nouveau style. Designed by Ferdinand Boberg, the building was used for the customs control of goods, and is “culturally marked” or “k-marked”. Buildings in Sweden that are k-marked are protected by law, which means that the building may not be modified in any way that diminishes its historic value. The original brick façade of the beautiful customs building is intact, while the interiors have been renovated to house the museum.

The city of Stockholm has funded the 250 million crown restoration costs. In addition to the exhibition spaces, 5 500 square meters of Fotografiska houses an academy, bistro, cafe, bar, conference rooms, museum shop, gallery, and event spaces.

“Annie Leibovitz: a Photographer’s Life 1990-2005″ will be the main exhibition opening the Fotografiska.
