The Portland Art Museum has announced the appointment of Julia Dolan, Ph.D. as curator of photography. Dolan will be responsible for the Museum’s photography collection which includes 6,000 images chronicling the history of photography and the Pacific Northwest. Her duties will also include researching and growing the permanent collection and presenting exhibitions based on the Museum’s collection and important works from public and private collections around the world.

“I am delighted to be joining the Portland Art Museum and look forward to working with the region’s many photographers and photography enthusiasts,” said Dolan. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to both showcase and augment the Museum’s comprehensive collection of photographs, which boasts an exciting array of historic as well as contemporary works.”

Dolan is currently the Horace W. Goldsmith Curatorial Fellow in Photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In that role she has curated and assisted with the development of multiple photography exhibitions including Spectacle (2009), Transcending the Literal: Photographs by Ansel Adams from the Collection (2008), and The Art of Lee Miller (2008). She also recommends objects for acquisition, supervises visits by scholars and students, and conducted research on the collection.

Prior to her position at the Philadelphia Museum of Art she held positions with the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, in Andover, Mass and Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum.

Dolan received her Doctor of Philosophy in Art History from Boston University and a Master of Arts in Art History from The Pennsylvania State University.
