Photographers from around the world were invited to submit conservation-themed photographs in the following categories: Landscape, Flora, Wildlife, Underwater, Environment at Risk, and one category new this year – Community at Risk, which focuses on environmental threats to urban areas. Two other categories that are truly unique to this competition are: Documenting a Conservation Project, which features images from photographers who have personal involvement in an ongoing conservation project, and Puget Sound at Risk, a regional category sponsored by the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance. The competition also includes a Student category for those under 18 years of age or in school.
A panel of four judges, including the Burke’s exhibit designer, Andrew Whiteman, selected winning photographs in each of the nine categories. This year, featured photographers include Northwest photographer Annie Marie Musselman and Swiss photographer Franco Banfi, known for his underwater images. The winning photographs, along with honorable mentions in each category, will be displayed in the Burke Museum exhibit.
The ICP Awards competition was founded in 1997 by Art Wolfe, a Seattle native and well-known nature photographer and published author. A special prize will be given to the recipient of the “Art Wolfe Award” for a photograph that exemplifies his founding vision of the ICP Awards to raise conservation awareness globally. The winner of the Art Wolfe Award will be announced at the opening of the Burke Museum exhibit on June 19.
“The hope of the ICP Awards is to honor photography as a unique medium capable of bringing awareness and preservation to our environment through art,” comments Art Wolfe. Exhibit opening day activities will include in-gallery talks by selected winners and conservation photography presentations throughout the day on Sat., June 19 from 10 am to 4 pm. The International Conservation Photography Awards exhibit is organized by the Burke Museum in partnership with the ICP Awards.
The exhibit is sponsored by Microsoft Corporation with support from the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation, The Mountaineers Foundation, Carl Skoog Memorial Fund, and the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs. ICP Awards sponsors include Microsoft Icons of Imaging, Canon, and Washington Environmental Council.
The Burke Museum is located on the University of Washington campus, at the corner of NE 45 th St and 17th Ave NE. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm daily, and until 8 pm on first Thursdays.
