Michelangelo: Anatomy as Architecture at the Muscarelle Museum of Art

The exhibition Michelangelo: Anatomy as Architecture opens February 6, 2010 at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary (www.wm.edu/muscarelle). The Muscarelle Museum is the only venue in the United States for this exhibition, which consists of drawings, archival pages, and engravings on loan from the finest collection of Michelangelo drawings and his ancestral home, the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, Italy.

Michelangelo: Anatomy as Architecture, Drawings by the Master opens February 6, 2010 and runs through April 11, 2010.

One of the most famous artists in the history of the world, Michelangelo Buonarroti is known for his iconic works such as the Sistine Chapel and the sculpture David.

Without a doubt, however, the rare and infrequently seen drawings of this Renaissance artist are among the most treasured in the world.

Combined with Old Master drawings from the collection of the Museum, the exhibition depicts and illustrates Michelangelo’s concept and philosophy that architecture was anatomical in a way that has never been done before. The exhibition explores new research in Michelangelo architectural studies, includes digital reconstructions of buildings never before believed to be influenced by Michelangelo, and lectures by world-renowned scholars on Michelangelo.

During this exhibition, there is an admission fee of $15.00.
