For some time now the term *Hot Pot*, a traditional dish with chicken and pepper, is synonymous for the fast developing neighborhood of galleries around Moganshan Road. This area, also called M 50, consists of narrow alleys and old industrial buildings, and offers numerous galleries, studios and showrooms spaces for experiments and artistic ventures.
The Tangram Art Center recently joined this community, being highly progressive, in November one could even say aggressive. The exhibition *8 SPIRITS_LOST SOULS* of New York based artist Udo Spreitzenbarth, starting on Friday 13th, could split opinions.
Among Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, the portrayed muse Bai Ling is one of the world famous actresses of the People’s Republic of China. She is well known for her startling appearances at big media events. It is an exhibition without a happy ending.
Bai Ling is dressed in a Tibetan ceremonial robe. She has a serious, but at the same time absent expression, which the audience may view as controversial.
Udo Spreitzenbarth hit the bullseye. His portray of Bai Ling shows a character that has only one audience: herself. She hangs on to her dreams and remains a stranger in her own house and body. The addition *Lost Souls* does justice to every pose and expression, and defines the talented photographer, originally a billboard photographer, as a narrative artist. Udo Spreitzenbarth fragments the soul. He is not merely an artist but also an archeologist and psychologist, setting the stage and conserving stories of human crisis.
An unusual exhibition. It features works that were not publicly shown until now and that may be critically perceived. The Tangram Art Center offers us an exhibition of two unusual people, one ambiguous muse and one very headstrong photographer without airs and graces. Good choice!
