Imi Knoebel in two ’acts’ at the Deutsche Guggenheim

Once a year, the Deutsche Guggenheim presents an exhibition organized by Deutsche Bank. In 2009, this presentation will showcase the complex work of Imi Knoebel in an ’Exhibition in Two Acts’ in Berlin. New works by the artist will be shown at the Deutsche Guggenheim under the title ICH NICHT (NOT ME) from May 23 until June 26, 2009. From July 4 until August 2, 2009 the second ’act’ of the exhibition ENDUROS, will present an overview of Knoebel’s work between 1968 and 2005 from the Deutsche Bank Collection.

Both exhibitions at the Deutsche Guggenheim were made possible with the close collaboration of the artist and of the Neue Nationalgalerie which will show Knoebel’s installation ZU HILFE, ZU HILFE from May 23 until August 2009.

Imi Knoebel represents the continuation of the series of Deutsche Bank Exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Unter den Linden which has to date featured solo exhibitions by Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch, Richard Artschwager, Kara Walker and Cai Guo-Qiang. Born 1940 in Dessau and living in Düsseldorf, Knoebel belongs to the select group of artists whose career the Deutsche Bank Collection has followed closely for 25 years. A student of Joseph Beuys, Knoebel has collaborated with many artists of his generation, always affirming his unique position. His inquiry into the basic principles of form and color seems more relevant today than ever, especially in view of the current revival of 1960s and 1970s abstract art among younger artists.

The exhibition is a play in two acts. The first consists of paintings from the period 2005-2009. Titled ICH NICHT , it formulates an emphatic answer to Barnett Newman’s question Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue? The paintings, mostly large-scale, evidence the artist’s adept handling of primary colors.

ENDUROS, the second act of the show, gives an overview of Knoebel’s work between 1968 and 2005, covering the whole spectrum of his non-objective vocabulary of forms. Approximately 200 collages, drawings, photographs and prints from the Deutsche Bank Collection allow a comprehensive assessment of Knoebel’s artistic development. These works pay tribute to a medium that has always been the focus of Deutsche Bank’s engagement in the visual arts: paper.

With more than 56,000 works of art, the Deutsche Bank Collection is considered the world’s most important collection of drawings and photographs after 1945. Since its first purchase in 1984, the collection has acquired more than 1,000 works on paper by Imi Knoebel.

The monographic catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition contains more than 300 illustrations and essays by Hubertus Butin, Jörg Heiser, Friedhelm Hütte, David Moos, Petra Richter, Martin Schulz and Johannes Stüttgen [price € 39.80]. Two special editions conceived for the shows at the Deutsche Guggenheim will also be available: Nr.47/1, the object An meine grüne seite [on my green side] and 47/2, a print entitled drunter und drüber [under and over], both 2009 / edition size 25 / price €3,200 and €700 respectively. Both editions are exclusively available at the Deutsche Guggenheim Shop, all proceeds will be donated to the charity Kinderstern e.V.

ICH NICHT and ENDUROS will be accompanied by a comprehensive lecture series featuring Eugen Blume, Martin Schulz, Johannes Stüttgen and Jörg Heiser. Children and youths will also be able to test their skills in special accompanying workshops.
