“Plethora of Pop & Expressionism” from Ronnie Zimmermann and Swetlana Gerner

Art exhibition opening to the group show “Plethora of Pop & Expressionism” at Planet Vivid Gallery, 17th of April at 19:00.

Ronnie Zimmermann, *1960 Dartford U.K., 1962 – 2004 New York, U.S.A.

The new works of the New York Artist Ronnie Zimmermann deal with the dynamics of life. He paints tragic-comical figures and abstract paintings, self-reflecting the conscious and subconscious. His works are expressions of his personality and rich of color and structure. A spectacle happens in his paintings that relates directly to his artistic process of creation. It is of performative charakter and ties to the tradition of Action Painting. His recent positions are most impressive in context to the gallery space and the presence of the artist. Paintings of abstract figures in context to geometrical arrangements of color areas on canvas and urban situations generate interfaces to ideal and reality. Zimmermann was born 1960 in Dartford, England and spent most of his life in New York. He currently lives and works in Frankfurt / Main.

Swetlana Gerner *1964, Kiew, Ukraine

1978-1983 Institut of Design and Applied Arts, Graphic Design, Kiew
1986-1992 Academy of Art and Design, Charkov
1993-1997 University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt, Photography
Swetlana Gerner is a renown conceptual artist. Her most successful art installation was shown at the Shirn Kunsthalle, museum for modern art in Frankfurt am Main, in 1997. Theme of the installation is „Caught Between Chairs“, where the artist wants to boost courage to have an active and dynamic attitude towards life. The chairs, from the famous designer Robin Day, demonstrate that we should free ourselves from social and cultural restraints. The chairs were from a functional aspect at the time an innovation because they were the first ones to be stackable. Gerner uses the chair in her installation as a symbol for being forced into a passive and motionless composure.
The installation „Caught Between Chairs“ follows the tradition of Serial Art. The chair as an object of every day life, that in theory is infinitely replaceable and could be continued endlessly.
Gerner’s newest installation „Dogs Talk“ has again serial characteristics. Paintings of dogs are taken out of an art historical context such as from Francisco de Goya, Portrait Marquesa de Pontejos.
Displayed in the favourable art historical context dwarfish bread dogs (i.e. Pugs) attain true greatness and are allowed to speak up.

Welcome to Planet Vivid Gallery,
Planet Vivid Gallery opened in November 2006 and was founded by Helen Hofmann, the gallerist, and Ronnie Zimmermann, who is the resident artist. This gallery project is about creating something new and different with energy and passion.
We chose a special and different name for the gallery, with the intention to create on the one hand a communication platform for modern contemporary art and on the other hand to indicate our concept of art, which is life-affirming, cosmopolitan, spontaneous, emotionally profound.

Planet Vivid’s Emotional Expressiveness,
Many times I am asked how I choose the artists and how I select the artwork. Most important is that the artists of Planet Vivid are dedicated to creating art. The artists we work with are vivid and energetic and devote their lives to creating art. We are interested in their well being and professional development. Like us, they have a strong passion for what they do. The artwork chosen is different, fresh, new and exciting.

Planet Vivid Combines Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art,
From an art-historical perspective Planet Vivid represents art that is influenced by various expressionist forms of art but also by Pop Art. The artists combine in their work emotional intensity and authentic self-expression. The selection of Pop Art in combination with abstract expressionism is not meant to be conflicting but should address scenery, situations and things out of our everyday life. Simple shapes, compositions and figures are combined with bright colors in large distinct surfaced areas, which gives the artwork a special emotional expressiveness.

Planet Vivid’s Energy Paintings,
The pure abstract and also figurative expressionist work of the artists that we choose, consists of bright and bold colors, that affect the observer in a refreshing and electrifying way. The artwork we exhibit emanates intense energy. This affect is achieved mainly because they are created in a spontaneous way which in combination with intense colors creates a „busy“ feel, while observing the artwork.
Nevertheless spontaneous energy paintings require a great deal of preparation up front especially when they are on a larger scale.

Planet Vivid Represents Playfulness and Struggle for Life,
Due to the colors, composition, spontaneity combined with simplistic shapes and a sophisticated sense of humor the artwork of Planet Vivid represents on the one hand playful images and create a feeling of joy. On the other hand our intention is to also show the tough and grown up part of life and not to only create an idealistic world based on child fantasy. Images around the struggle for life are created in a social and urban context. The figurative work may seem tragic and comic at the same time, whereas the comic side partially creates a sense of uneasiness.
