LONDON – “Cerdlun” is a phrase coined to blend the Welsh words for “postcard” and “picture”. Cerdlun will be a large trumpeted exhibition/sale of original work donated by artists, celebrities and well wishers from all over the world, to raise money for one of Wales’ best loved art galleries, Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, in Llanbedrog.
The art is A5 or postcard size, on subjects and in a medium of the artists’ choice i.e. a painting, textile, drawing, cartoon, doodle or whatever. Each piece is signed, dated and titled on the back only, encouraging buyers to use their skill, personal taste and judgement rather than a gallery label to guide their choice from up to a 1,000 originals on display. The stunning quality of the art work received has greatly excited the organisers.
The list of artists who have donated work includes the great Scottish artist Jack Vettriano. He has kindly donated a very rare drawing to Cerdlun. This, along with contributions from William Selwyn, Gareth Parry, Keith Bowen, Bryn Terfel and a host of renowned Welsh artists/celebrities, is making Cerdlun the most talked about art sale of 2008. To get the ball rolling on opening night a small selection of works will be auctioned on the opening night.
The opening however is already a sell out. Phone bidders can register their interest for the auction by contacting the gallery before the 25th of July. The Cerdlun sale continues on Sunday and Monday 27/8 July when entry will be free to the general public. All work is to be sold at one price, £25, so this is a wonderful opportunity to acquire valuable original art for the cost of a small print, whilst supporting one of Wales’ finest galleries.
