Marlborough Fine Art (London) Presents Matthew Carr

Marlborough Fine Art (London) presents Matthew Carr – New York, on view 25 June – 19 July 2008. Following a successful show in New York in 2006, Matthew Carr’s new exhibition in London has a markedly literary content. Carr’s preferred way of working is, as he describes it, “very intense blasts of concentration with no distraction” and this exhibition includes penetrating portrait drawings of some thirty writers, publishers and literary agents including studies of Beryl Bainbridge, Nicholas Coleridge, James Fenton, Antonia Fraser, Sebastian Faulks, Alan Hollinghurst, Tom Stoppard and A N Wilson.

On a larger scale, Carr has produced majestic drawings of a range of subjects: a rhinoceros, crows and Mimi the family dog together with a powerful nude and the enigmatically beautiful five-panel study of Whitby headstones. Whitby on the east coast of Yorkshire has a brooding, Bronte-esque atmosphere and is where Dracula is reputed to have first tasted English blood. The tombstones emerge as five richly textured compositions in which one may read the poetry of sky, clouds, mountains, rivers, trees and rocks at will.

It is five years since Matthew Carr last showed his sharp and forceful works in London and the new exhibition will reinforce the artist’s distinguished standing as one of our foremost draughtsmen working in conté pencil on prepared charcoal paper. Matthew has also embarked on a new series of etchings which form part of the exhibition.
